Utah's Best Play Sand is a great choice for sandboxes, backyard play areas, and kids' digging and building spaces because it combines the best of two of our sands in one soft, easy-to-play-in blend. This is a roughly 50/50 mix of our Mason Sand and our Ultra Fine Beach Sand, which gives it a smooth, soft feel like beach sand along with enough body from the Mason Sand to hold its shape for building and shaping. With its light tan-beige color and fine, even grain, Utah's Best Play Sand is a comfortable, versatile sand for play areas of all sizes.

Installation Depth Guide — Cubic Yard Coverage for Utah's Best Play Sand

Note: Play sand is installed deeper than a decorative or setting-bed sand because the depth is what gives kids room to dig, build, and play. A typical installation depth is 6–12 inches. Sand settles and gets pushed out of the play area over time, so plan to top it up as needed. For best results, install over ground with good drainage and use a border or sandbox frame to keep the sand contained. Landscape fabric underneath can help keep the sand from mixing with the soil below, as long as the area can still drain. Covering the sand when it is not in use helps keep it clean and keeps out leaves, debris, and animals. When in doubt, test a small section first.

• Sizing: A fine, soft, granular sand with a mix of ultra fine and slightly coarser particles, with the occasional tiny pebble or lightly clumped piece. Natural variation in grain size and moisture between loads is normal.
• Composition: A blend of approximately half Mason Sand and half Ultra Fine Beach Sand, both naturally occurring, locally sourced sands. Blend ratios are approximate and may vary slightly from load to load.
• Appearance: Light tan to soft beige, with occasional small pebbles and lightly clumped pieces. Color may vary slightly between loads and appears darker when wet.
• Usage notes: Our go-to blend for sandboxes, backyard play areas, and digging and building spaces, where a soft feel and a sand that holds its shape both matter. Because it contains Ultra Fine Beach Sand, it can produce some dust when it is dry and windy, so keep it lightly damp while spreading and consider a dust mask in dry or windy conditions.
• History: Material has remained generally consistent in color and texture over time. Minor variation between loads is normal for a blended natural product.
