Slag Insta-Path™
Description
Slag Insta-Path is a great choice for walkways, garden paths, and patio surfaces because it compacts tightly into a firm, stable surface that still feels natural underfoot. Unlike washed gravel, this material is a fine crusher fines mix that includes natural dust and small particles by design — it's exactly what allows it to lock together into a solid, walkable path rather than staying loose like decorative rock. Slag is a dense, heavy material — understood to be a by-product of the metal smelting process — giving it a noticeably higher weight per cubic yard than most other path materials we carry. With its cool gray tone that deepens to a striking black when wet, Slag Insta-Path brings bold, modern contrast to any path or walkway. Whether used for a garden path, a utility walkway, or a low-traffic patio surface, Slag Insta-Path delivers a clean, finished look with minimal upkeep.

Installation Depth Guide — Cubic Yard Coverage for Slag Insta-Path
| Depth | Coverage per Cubic Yard | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1″ | ~324 sq ft | Too shallow |
| 1.5″ | ~216 sq ft | Not recommended |
| 2″ | ~162 sq ft | Minimum depth |
| 2.5″ | ~130 sq ft | Recommended |
| 3″ | ~108 sq ft | Ideal depth |
| 3.5″ | ~93 sq ft | Usually unnecessary |
| 4″ | ~81 sq ft | Excessive |
Note: A typical installation depth is 2–3 inches for this material, which provides a firm, stable surface for walkways and garden paths. Because this product compacts significantly once installed and tamped, plan to install slightly deeper than your target finished depth — a 2.5–3.5 inch loose layer typically compacts down to a 2–3 inch finished surface. Because Slag is notably denser and heavier than our other path materials, a cubic yard will weigh more than the same volume of standard crusher fines — worth keeping in mind for truck or trailer weight limits. Installing over a weed barrier and compacted sub-base, and containing the edges with steel or plastic edging, will give the longest-lasting, most stable result. When in doubt, test a small section first.
Product details, what you should know
- Sizing: Fine crusher fines — a well-graded mix of small aggregate particles and natural dust designed to compact tightly. Not a uniform decorative gravel; the mix of particle sizes is intentional.
- Cleanliness: Naturally contains dust and fine particles as part of the mix — this is a feature, not a flaw, since it's what allows the material to compact and lock together into a stable surface. Not recommended if you're looking for a clean, dust-free washed material.
- Appearance: Fine, cool gray coloring that deepens dramatically to a near-black tone when wet — one of the most dramatic wet/dry color shifts in our path lineup. Compacts to a smooth, tight surface rather than a loose decorative texture. Color may vary slightly between loads.
- Density: Slag is a notably dense, heavy material compared to our standard crusher fines products — a cubic yard of Slag will weigh more than the same volume of a typical path material. This is understood to be a result of its origin as a by-product of the metal smelting process, giving it a higher mineral/metallic content.
- History: Material has remained generally consistent in color and gradation over time, as is typical for a locally sourced crusher fines product.
- Also known as: Commonly referred to as slag fines, smelter slag, or black path fines.
Slag Insta-Path stands out for its bold, modern look and dramatic wet-to-dry contrast — a cool gray that deepens to near-black after watering or rain. Unlike decorative gravel, which stays loose, this material's fines content lets it compact into a firm, walkable surface — ideal for garden paths, utility walkways, and low-traffic patios. Worth noting: because this is a denser, heavier material than our other path products, a given cubic yard will weigh noticeably more — factor that in when planning delivery loads or truck/trailer capacity. For the best long-term result, install over a compacted sub-base with a weed barrier underneath and edging along the sides to keep the material contained.
