Compost "Steer"
Description
Compost "Steer" is a great choice for vegetable gardens, flower beds, raised beds, and lawn renovation because it adds organic matter, improves soil structure, and helps the soil hold moisture and nutrients. This is a rich, dark, steer manure-based compost with a fine, crumbly texture that's easy to spread and easy to work into existing soil. Whether used to amend native soil, top-dress a lawn, or fill and refresh planting beds, Compost "Steer" gives plants a nutrient-rich start and helps build healthier soil season after season.

Installation Depth Guide — Cubic Yard Coverage for Compost "Steer"
| Depth | Coverage per Cubic Yard | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1″ | ~324 sq ft | Too shallow |
| 1.5″ | ~216 sq ft | Not recommended |
| 2″ | ~162 sq ft | Minimum depth |
| 3″ | ~108 sq ft | Recommended |
| 4″ | ~81 sq ft | Ideal depth |
| 5″ | ~65 sq ft | Usually unnecessary |
| 6″ | ~54 sq ft | Excessive |
Note: A typical installation depth for garden beds and planting areas is 2–4 inches, ideally worked into the top 4–6 inches of existing soil rather than left as a thick layer on its own. For lawn top-dressing, a much thinner layer of ¼–½ inch is plenty — a cubic yard covers roughly 650–1,300 sq ft at that depth. Like most manure-based composts, Compost "Steer" is rich in nutrients, so more is not always better; avoid heavy applications around young seedlings and salt-sensitive plants, and water well after spreading. Keep compost pulled back slightly from plant stems and trunks. When in doubt, test a small section first.
Product details, what you should know
- Sizing: A fine, crumbly texture made up mostly of small, well-broken-down particles, with the occasional small piece of woody material or fiber. Natural variation in texture and moisture between loads is normal.
- Composition: Composted steer manure, aged and broken down into a dark, soil-like material. A natural organic product, not a sterile or manufactured blend.
- Appearance: Rich dark brown to near-black in color, with a soft, earthy look. Color may vary slightly between loads and appears darker when moist.
- Usage notes: Best used to amend existing soil — spread a layer over the surface and work it into the top several inches for the best results. It can also be used as a top-dressing around established plants and on lawns. Water after spreading to help it settle and begin feeding the soil.
- History: Material has remained generally consistent in color and texture over time. Minor variation between loads is normal for a natural compost product.
- Also known as: Commonly referred to as steer manure compost, composted steer manure, cow manure compost, or garden compost.
Compost "Steer" is a go-to for customers building up tired or sandy soil, filling raised beds, or getting a vegetable garden ready for planting. Its fine, crumbly texture mixes in easily and spreads evenly, and the dark color gives beds a clean, finished look right away. For the best results, blend it into your existing soil instead of using it straight, and apply it in a 2–4 inch layer rather than piling it on thick. Stop by the yard to see the compost in person and pick up a free sample before you order.
