Hardwood Brown Mulch
Description
Hardwood Brown Mulch is a great choice for garden beds, tree rings, and foundation plantings because it suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture, and adds a warm, natural look to any landscape. This shredded hardwood mulch is dyed a rich, deep brown that reads as a more natural, earthy tone than our red or black options, blending easily into a wide range of landscape styles. Whether used around trees, in flower beds, or along walkways, Hardwood Brown Mulch delivers both practical benefits and a classic, polished appearance to any planting area.

Installation Depth Guide — Cubic Yard Coverage for Hardwood Brown Mulch
| Depth | Coverage per Cubic Yard | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1″ | ~324 sq ft | Too shallow |
| 1.5″ | ~216 sq ft | Not recommended |
| 2″ | ~162 sq ft | Minimum depth |
| 2.5″ | ~130 sq ft | Recommended |
| 3″ | ~108 sq ft | Ideal depth |
| 4″ | ~81 sq ft | Usually unnecessary |
| 5″ | ~65 sq ft | Excessive |
Note: A typical installation depth is 2–3 inches for most garden beds and planting areas. Keep mulch pulled back a few inches from tree trunks and plant stems — piling mulch directly against them ("volcano mulching") traps moisture against the bark and can lead to rot and pest issues. Depths beyond 4 inches can restrict oxygen and water from reaching plant roots and are not recommended. As this mulch breaks down over time, plan to top-dress annually to maintain depth and refresh color. When in doubt, test a small section first.
Product details, what you should know
- Sizing: A mix of shredded strands and small chipped pieces, generally 1"-3" in length. Natural variation in particle size is normal and typical of shredded hardwood mulch.
- Composition: Shredded hardwood, colored with a non-toxic iron oxide–based dye. Color is applied to the surface of the wood, so fresh-cut interior wood may show through as pieces break or weather over time.
- Appearance: Rich, deep brown color when fresh — a more natural, earthy tone than our red or black dyed options. Dyed mulch holds its color notably longer than undyed wood mulch, but all mulch will fade gradually with UV exposure over a season; a fresh top layer will restore the color.
- Usage notes: As with any fresh wood mulch, avoid working it directly into the soil, since decomposing wood can temporarily tie up nitrogen that plants need — spread on top of the soil surface instead. Keep mulch a few inches away from trunks and stems.
- History: Material composition and color has remained consistent over time. Minor variation in particle size and moisture content between loads is normal.
- Also known as: Commonly referred to as brown dyed mulch, chocolate mulch, or colored hardwood mulch.
Hardwood Brown Mulch is our most versatile dyed color — a rich, natural-looking brown that complements almost any landscape style without the boldness of red or black. It's a great choice for customers who want the longer-lasting color retention of a dyed mulch while still keeping a classic, understated look. Because it's dyed, it holds its color noticeably longer than natural mulch, but all mulch benefits from an annual refresh — both to maintain color and to keep the protective depth consistent as the layer below breaks down and feeds the soil.
